Mashup Score: 0Risk Factors for Poor Stent Tolerance: Improving Outcomes May Require a New Conceptualization of Pain - American Urological Association - 2 day(s) ago
The affliction caused by the ureteral stent is well known. Both necessary and undesirable, ureteral stents have long been the subject of multiple studies by investigators dedicated to reducing suffering related to their use. Multiple studies have shown promise, and ongoing trials persist, however, the ideal ureteral stent does not currently exist. The Urinary Stone Disease Research Network (USDRN) performed the Study to Enhance Understanding of Stent-Associated Symptoms (STENTS), a multicenter prospective observational cohort study of 484 participants, which allowed a comprehensive investigation to identify risk factors for stent-associated symptoms (SAS) with a nested cohort of 40 participants completing daily assessments and in-depth interviews for a thorough capture of the stent experience.

Patients with low-grade prostate cancer (PCa) on active surveillance are not immune to the impact of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). As utilization of active surveillance has increased over the past two decades, the number of men who can benefit from BPH treatment with a known prostate cancer diagnosis has also grown. Although clinical principles guide patient-centered care in this area, there remain little data to support these discussions and treatment decisions. Several important areas include the safety of BPH procedures in this population, outcomes with respect to urinary function, and the impact of BPH treatment on prostate cancer monitoring, follow-up testing, and long-term oncologic outcomes.

Mashup Score: 3AUA2024 RECAPS AUA2024 Plenary Recap: State of the Art of Ergonomics and Safety in the Operating Room - American Urological Association - 12 day(s) ago
The 2024 AUA meeting ushered in a cadre of exciting new advancements across the spectrum of urologic care. Additionally, for the first time, the plenary sessions provided a platform for a topic that has gained traction across many other surgical specialties: ergonomics and safety in the operating room (OR). With impending shortages of urologists of 12% to 46% projected by 2035, our specialty should embrace lessons in ergonomics to maximize longevity of existing surgeons.

As you enter the operating room (OR), the patient, your patient, is prepped and draped and ready for the prescribed surgery. You’re confident because you’ve performed this surgery numerous times before, but this time it’s different. This time when you look over your shoulder, your attending is not there…because in this OR, you’re the attending. Such is the case for every urologist as they enter independent practice and conduct their first case.

Mashup Score: 9AUA GUIDELINES Highlights From the 2024 AUA/SUFU Guideline for Overactive Bladder - American Urological Association - 23 day(s) ago
The 2024 AUA/SUFU Guideline on the Diagnosis and treatment of Idiopathic Overactive Bladder (OAB) is not an update of the previous OAB guideline, but is a new document generated by a fresh systematic review of the contemporary evidence on the diagnosis and management of OAB in all genders. It centers on an approach that maximizes OAB symptom control and patient quality of life through shared decision-making, while minimizing adverse events and burden of disease. The most notable feature of this current guideline is that it departs from the conventional “step therapy” model, which once dictated a linear treatment progression through behavioral modification, pelvic floor muscle therapy, pharmacotherapy, and finally advanced interventions.
