The use of racial-ethnic adjustments in the U.S. version of the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool may be underestimating fractures among underrepresented groups, and new, more accurate tools are needed, according to a task force report. The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) convened a task force to assess how well the U.S. version of the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX)

Imminent fall risk can be defined similarly to imminent fracture risk, that is, a 12-month or 24-month increased risk after the index event, which declines over time.1 This study by Schene and colleagues compares the fall risk of a large cohort of adults who experienced a fracture with fracture-free matched controls, to assess whether fall risk after the index fracture is time-dependent.2 This retrospective β¦

Mashup Score: 0Phase III clinical trial of autologous CD34β+βcell transplantation to accelerate fracture nonunion repair - BMC Medicine - 6 month(s) ago
Background We previously demonstrated that CD34β+βcell transplantation in animals healed intractable fractures via osteogenesis and vasculogenesis; we also demonstrated the safety and efficacy of this cell therapy in an earlier phase I/II clinical trial conducted on seven patients with fracture nonunion. Herein, we present the results of a phase III clinical trial conducted to confirm the results of the previous phase studies using a larger cohort of patients. Methods CD34β+βcells were mobilized via administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, harvested using leukapheresis, and isolated using magnetic cell sorting. Autologous CD34β+βcells were transplanted in 15 patients with tibia nonunion and 10 patients with femur nonunion, who were followed up for 52 weeks post transplantation. The main outcome was a reduction in time to heal the tibia in nonunion patients compared with that in historical control patients. We calculated the required number of patients as 15 based on the

Muscle mass as measured through high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT may not interact with bone measures to affect the risk for fractures among older men, though more studies are needed, according to study data. βIn this prospective study of older men, there were no consistent interactions between bone and muscle on fracture risk when using advancing medical imaging,β Ben Kirk,
