Mashup Score: 2Networks of human milk microbiota are associated with host genomics, childhood asthma, and allergic sensitization - 7 hour(s) ago
Fang et al. report associations between host genomics and human milk microbiota (HMM) among 885 mothers of the CHILD Cohort Study. Exposure to some of these heritable milk microbes may promote or protect the later development of childhood asthma and food/inhalant sensitization among milk-fed infants.

Mashup Score: 2Power-to-vitamins: producing folate (vitamin B9) from renewable electric power and CO2 with a microbial protein system - 8 hour(s) ago
Microbial protein is a promising alternative to conventional agriculture to safeguard the Earth’s resources and support a circular economy. In a two-stage bioprocess, acetate served as an intermediate molecule to grow yeast biomass enriched with folate and protein. This versatile fermentation platform can address food scarcity and alleviate micronutrient deficiencies.

Adding a spatial dimension provides unique and important insights into fundamental questions in biology. The emergence of new cutting-edge techniques allows us to accurately assess the spatial landscape of biological systems at cellular and subcellular resolution. Incorporating a spatial element into cancer biology specifically has allowed researchers to explore tumor heterogeneity and has been used to identify molecular pathways, genetic processes, and clinically relevant biomarkers that underlie

Slimak et al. report the discovery of a late Neanderthal individual from Grotte Mandrin in Mediterranean France and its genome. The genome reveals a relatively early divergence at ∼100,000 years ago with other late Neanderthals. It belonged to a population with a small group size that showed no introgression with other known late European Neanderthals, revealing ∼50 ka of genetic isolation. These results have important implications for resolving competing hypotheses about the causes of the disappearance of the Neanderthals.

Mashup Score: 5LabLinks: Microbiome - 1 day(s) ago
The goal of this Lab Links is to bring together scientists from diverse research backgrounds to share how they analyze microbial communities in different contexts and how they integrate knowledge and techniques from different fields to answer complex questions. In doing so, we will help microbiome research chart a course towards more effective strategies and integrative understanding.

Mashup Score: 0Active European warzone impacts raptor migration - 1 day(s) ago
Russell et al. found that when migrating through Ukraine in 2022, Greater Spotted Eagles were exposed to conflict events, which impacted their migratory behavior. They made route deviations and used fewer stopover sites compared with previous years, potentially increasing the energetic cost of the migration and having sublethal fitness effects.

Mashup Score: 3Photochemical CO2 hydrogenation to carbon nanotubes and H2O for oxygen recovery in space exploration - 1 day(s) ago
The main supply of oxygen in space exploration is derived from water electrolysis. Herein, we discovered a mild photochemical hydrogenation process to extract oxygen from metabolic CO2, thereby closing the oxygen recycling loop. The tip-growth mode of CNTs assures long-term system operation. The oxygen recovery can reach approximately 68% when using flowing CO2 and H2 during a 100 h reaction period, surpassing the theoretical maximum of 50% for the Sabatier reaction combined with water electrolysis at the International Space Station.
