There are many ways for nurses to help prevent patient falls, but there’s no safe way for a nurse to manually assist a patient who is falling. Why do nurses feel a ‘duty to assist’ despite this risk of being injured? In some cases, nurses don’t understand the ergonomic risks involved. But many also feel a moral, ethical, and instinctive duty to assist a falling patient. This is true even of nurses who have been injured in the past while assisting a fall. The authors argue that nurses should let go of this deeply ingrained ‘mental model’ while implementing more effective fall prevention strategies.
