In December 2015, our son, William, started complaining of leg/knee pain. William had always been an active boy, so we figured that he must have just hurt himself doing something physical. After a few days of the pain continuing, my husband thought that maybe it was âgrowing pains.â We continued to keep an eye on it but werenât too concerned at this point. By the end of the week, I called our pediatrician for an appointment. William had an exam and bloodwork done. He was also given antibiotics. I got a phone call the next day and was told that William had a viral infection and that the muscle pain was secondary to the infection. If he wasnât improving within two days, I was to call back. William hadnât improved, so I called the pediatrician back. At this point, I was told that they wanted to run bloodwork on William again that day and also wanted him seen by an orthopedist. We stopped to have blood drawn on our way to the orthopedic office later that day. William had been in decent spi

My name is Mabel. I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in December 2018. I started aggressive treatment at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) became my safety net emotionally and financially. Emotionally they were very present and readily available to answer any questions or concerns I had. Financially they helped me cover the costs of my private medical insurance premiums, co-pays, and co-insurance for medication, labs, and tests. I am forever thankful to the LLS because they are able to help people like me.

Freia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at the age of 8. She and her family had just landed in Denmark for a family vacation when her parents noticed something wasn’t right. After several trips to the hospital, they drove to Sweden where Freiaâs grandparents live. It was there that her family heard those awful words, âFreia has cancer.â  After 49 days of hospital stays, Freia was finally strong enough to return home to Texas where she is currently undergoing treatment at Dell Childrenâs Medical Center. Her final treatment is October 2021, and we will get to celebrate her 11th birthday at Light The Night this year!   In her spare time, Freia loves dancing, art, and reading. She also loves to travel and explore the outdoors!  Freiaâs words of encouragement are, âWhen things get tough, look on the bright side. Look for the light in the dark.â Â

I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) two years ago. I had never heard of this cancer until I was diagnosed. I found out I had cancer when my T2 vertebra had fractured in my back, and they called the fracture a pathological fracture, meaning an injury didnât cause it. Every test was run, and it was confirmed that I had cancer. Still in denial, I wanted a second opinion. A second opinion was done, and I had to accept it because I have children ages 19, 10, and 6. I wanted to be here with them as long as possible. Having myeloma hasnât been easy, but so far, I havenât been depressed about it because I am still living my life and traveling with my kids. Depression wasnât an option for me. I believe everything happens for a reason, good and bad. I changed my mindset, and I have been kicking myelomaâs tail for two years. I will be celebrating my 40th birthday on Wednesday, March 30, and I have reached my first remission! I hope it lasts a long time.

I went out to ring in 2023 on New Yearâs Eve telling everyone it would be MY year, a time to celebrate new projects and dreams I had been conjuring. A simpler life. Days later, I developed pneumonia, bronchitis, severe muscle pain, and then heart failure from all of it. In March, an x-ray that was supposed to look at my chest for heart failure instead showed lesions and holes from my pelvis to my rib cage, a sign of advanced multiple myeloma (MM) which was confirmed weeks later. I had no idea what it was or what it meant, but luckily, I had friends who were fighting cancer who helped comfort and lead me to better answers than Google. I read through The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) website, and a friend helped me get a smart, reassuring second opinion with UCLA with the help of LLS. I’ve had a round of radiation and am on my fifth cycle of chemotherapy. Navigating the appointments, records, insurance, disability, and financial sides of having cancer is something no one is prepared

Before I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (MM) at age 34, my life looked very different from what it is today. I was a husband and a father. I had a full-time job at the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and I worked out a lot. And now? Well, I still work out a lot; thatâs never changed, and Iâll always be a father. But the rest of it? Itâs all gone away. And I couldnât be any more at peace with it than I am now. In early 2005, while vacationing with my family. I was working out in the resort gym. I received an excruciating pain in my shoulder as I completed a movement with the weights. An elderly man saw the grimace on my face and asked, âHow long have you had shoulder problems?â I responded that I had never had any shoulder issues. The pain subsided, and I continued to enjoy the rest of my vacation. Upon returning home, I played basketball in my yard and again experienced that pain. I went to my family practice doctor to see if they could determine where the problem came from. He continu
