Background Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is characterized by the enlargement and weakening of the heart and is a major cause of heart failure in children. Infection and nutritional deficiencies are culprits for DCMP. Zinc is an important nutrient for human health due to its anti-oxidant effect that protects cell against oxidative damage. This case-control study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary intake of zinc and selenium and the risk of DCMP in pediatric patients. Methods A total of 36 DCMP patients and 72 matched controls were recruited, and their dietary intakes were assessed via a validated food frequency questionnaire. We used chi-square and sample T-test for qualitative and quantitative variables, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was applied to assess the relationship between selenium and zinc intake with the risk of DCMP. Results After fully adjusting for confounding factors, analyses showed that selenium (OR = 0.19, CI = 0.057–0.069, P trend < 0.01

Objective To explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI ) and the severity of tic disorders (TDs) in children 6–14 years old. Methods A total of 86 children diagnosed with TDs in a hospital between Jan. 2023 and Sept. 2023 were collected by convenient sampling method, and the general data and TD-specific data were collected and analyzed. Results Univariate analysis showed that patients with different Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) grades had statistically significant differences in age, BMI, residence, snacking pattern, weekly physical exercise frequency, weekly physical exercise time, and proportion of cesarean birth. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the YGTSS score grades were related to BMI, snacking pattern, and cesarean birth of the patients. Correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between BMI grades and the YGTSS score grades, with a higher BMI indicating more severe TDs. Predictive value evaluation showed that BMI, snacking pattern,

Purpose This study was aimed to investigate the risk factors of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in twin preterm infants. Methods The clinical data of 67 pairs of twin preterm infants admitted to the neonatal department of our hospital from January 2010 to December 2021 were retrospectively collected. One of the twins had NEC (Bell II and above) and the other twin without NEC. They were divided into NEC group and control group according to whether NEC occurred or not. Results Univariate analysis showed that NEC was associated with congenital heart disease, small for gestational age, mild asphyxia at birth and feeding intolerance (P < 0.05). Conclusion Occurrence of NEC was associated with congenital heart disease, small for gestational age, and asphyxia at birth. For twin preterm infants with congenital heart disease, small for gestational age, or asphyxia at birth, special attention should be paid to the occurrence of NEC to minimize and avoid the occurrence of NEC.

Mashup Score: 2Proportion of vitamin D deficiency in children/adolescents with type 1 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis - BMC Pediatrics - 2 month(s) ago
Background The impact of vitamin D on type 1 diabetes has been a controversial topic in public health. Furthermore, significant differences in the proportion of vitamin D have been noted. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the overall proportion of vitamin D deficiency in children/adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Methods Based on six electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Ovid Medline, ProQuest, and Cochrane Library), eligible studies since the databases’ inception up to April 2022 were searched. Reference lists were also manually searched to identify additional studies. Overall, studies with statistical information on vitamin D deficiency in children and adolescents with T1D were included, and a random effects model was applied for the meta-analysis. In addition, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were carried out to evaluate heterogeneity, and publication bias was evaluated by using Egger’s test. Results A total of 45 studies involving 6,995 p
