Objective There has been conflicting evidence in earlier research on the association between parental age and autism risk. To clarify this association, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of observational studies. The primary objective of this study was to determine the association between parents’ age and the risk of autism in the offspring. Methods PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched for reports published up to November 2023. Results from relevant studies were pooled using random effects models. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were performed to examine heterogeneity between the studies. Studies were included in this meta-analysis that focused on children with autism and examined the relationship between parents’ age (mother or father) and the risk of autism. The quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). Results This meta-analysis included 41 articles. The low age of mother (OR = 0.96, (95% CIs: 0.88–1.05) and father (OR = 1.11, (9

Mashup Score: 0The impact of co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms on adolescent functioning, a cross-sectional survey - BMC Psychology - 16 day(s) ago
Adolescents who experience poor mental health may develop chronic pain. Similarly, those with chronic pain may develop mental health symptoms. Little is known concerning how these co-occurring symptoms are associated with adolescent functioning. Our online cross-sectional quantitative study compared the specific nature of challenges to psychosocial functioning, across 4 groups: (1) adolescents with co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms; (2) adolescents who only experience chronic pain symptoms; (3) adolescents who only experience mental health symptoms, and (4) adolescents who do not report either symptom. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing pain experiences, mental health symptoms and psychosocial functioning. After controlling for pain intensity, findings revealed significant differences, in physical, social, and family functioning across all groups. Significantly worse physical functioning was reported by adolescents with co-occurring pain and

Objective This study aims to conduct a literature review and meta-analysis on the use of Happiness Management strategies in internal communication. The objective was to extract theoretical constructs of dimensions and indicators for the development of a guide for its application, validated by a panel of experts. Methods A systematic literature review and meta-analysis was performed under the protocol of the PRISMA Extension Guide of articles indexed in the Scopus database (2019–2024). The total number of extracted documents (n = 479) was screened based on the inclusion criteria, and the sample was delimited by 49 studies. Subsequently, after reading and analyzing the research, the dimensions and indicators of internal communication from a Happiness Management perspective were clustered. This guide was submitted to a panel of 13 experts who determined the reliability and validity of the construct and content using the Content Validity Index (CVI). Mashup Score: 2Cognitive health outcomes of fundamental motor skill applications in children through cooperative learning method - BMC Psychology - 2 month(s) ago
Background Previous research has suggests that cooperative learning methods and the development of fundamental motor skills support children’s cognitive development, and further studies covering various aspects are recommended. In this study, as an alternative to traditional physical education classes including fundamental motor skill activities, we investigated the impact of cooperative learning methods incorporating these skills on children’s visual-motor integration and selective attention. Methods A total of 60 boy children in the 10–11 age range were included in the study. Groups; classical method (10.95 ± 0.58age), and cooperative learning group (10.91 ± 0.42age). The study spanned a total of 24 physical education class hours. While the classical method group continued to attend physical education lessons with an FMS-based prepared program for 8 weeks, cooperative learning group participated in an FMS-based program prepared according to the cooperative learning method (40min/3day

Purpose Services organizations highly value proactive employees. Managers are interested in promoting frontline employees’ proactive behavior because proactivity is crucial for organizational success. The mechanism of negative workplace gossip on workplace prosocial behavior is unclear. This research investigates the factors hindering this valuable behavior, specifically focusing on negative workplace gossip and employee anxiety, through the lens of the conservation of resources theory. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from a sample of 352 female frontline employees across diverse service organizations using a two-wave design. Statistical analyses were conducted using appropriate software (e.g., SPSS, AMOS) to test the hypothesized relationships. Findings The study’s findings reveal that negative workplace gossip reduces employees’ proactive work behavior, and anxiety mediates the relationship between NWGS and proactive work behavior. Mashup Score: 2The power of animation: encouraging doctors to access support for psychological wellbeing - BMC Psychology - 6 month(s) ago
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated already high rates of poor psychological wellbeing in doctors. Many doctors perceive a stigma associated with acknowledging psychological wellbeing concerns, resulting in a reluctance to seek support for those concerns. The aim of this study was to develop a theoretically-informed and evidence-based composite narrative animation (CNA) to encourage doctors to access support for psychological wellbeing, and to evaluate the acceptability of the CNA.A composite narrative was developed from an evidence-base of interviews with 27 GP participants across Scotland (May–July 2020). The Behaviour Change Wheel was used to identify behaviour change techniques (BCTs) to be embedded within the CNA. The narrative was turned into a script in collaboration with an animation company. A brief animation ‘Jane the GP’ was developed reflecting specific BCTs.Scottish doctors (n = 83) were asked for their views on acceptability of the CNA concept, and subsequently asked to

Mashup Score: 5Social media-related nightmare — a potential explanation for poor sleep quality and low affective well-being in the social media era? - BMC Psychology - 7 month(s) ago
Research has posited that social media use during the day may be reflected in nighttime dreams. Nevertheless, no prior studies have explored frightening, unpleasant dreams arising from social media use. This study introduces the construct of the social media-related nightmare by (a) developing and validating a scale capturing negative-valenced dreams with themes of helplessness, loss of control, inhibition, victimization, and making mistakes in social media, and (b) examining relationships between social media use, social media-related nightmares, sleep quality, and affective well-being. A convenience sample of 595 Iranian adult social media users (Mage = 27.45, SDage = 11.42) reported on social media-related nightmare, social media use integration, anxiety, peace of mind, sleep quality, and nightmare distress. The Social Media-Related Nightmare Scale (SMNS) demonstrated a unidimensional structure with sound psychometric properties. The most common nightmares involved the inability to

Background Family and school environment play a crucial role across the different developmental stages of adolescence. This paper investigates the potential mediating role of family and school environments in the relationship between the three psychosocial predictors of depression, anxiety, stress, and Internet addiction (IA). Specifically, it focuses on the two stages of early and middle adolescence. Methods The study involved a survey of 407 adolescents from Qatar, comprising 250 early adolescents and 157 middle adolescents. Inclusion criteria for the study included adolescents between the ages of 10 to 17 years old, residents of Qatar and studying in a Qatar-based school. To assess the constructs of the three psychosocial predictors, IA, family environment, the study utilized the Depression, Stress, and Anxiety Scale (DASS), the Internet Addiction Diagnostic Questionnaire (IADQ), and the Brief Family Relationship Scale, respectively. School environment was measured using questions f
