Mashup Score: 755Cardiovascular health and cancer risk associated with plant based diets: An umbrella review - 17 hour(s) ago
Context Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and cancer are the two main leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Suboptimal diet, poor in vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grain, and rich in processed and red meat, refined grains, and added sugars, is a primary modifiable risk factor. Based on health, economic and ethical concerns, plant-based diets have progressively widespread worldwide. Objective This umbrella review aims at assessing the impact of animal-free and animal-products-free diets (A/APFDs) on the risk factors associated with the development of cardiometabolic diseases, cancer and their related mortalities. Data sources PubMed and Scopus were searched for reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published from 1st January 2000 to 31st June 2023, written in English and involving human subjects of all ages. Primary studies and reviews/meta-analyses based on interventional trials which used A/APFDs as a therapy for people with metabolic diseases were excluded. D

Background Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease commonly reported in humans in parts of Central and West Africa. This protocol is for an Expanded Access Programme (EAP) to be implemented in the Central African Republic, where Clade I monkeypox virus diseases is primarily responsible for most monkeypox infections. The objective of the programme is to provide patients with confirmed monkeypox with access to tecovirimat, a novel antiviral targeting orthopoxviruses, and collect data on clinical and virological outcomes of patients to inform future research. Methods The study will be conducted at participating hospitals in the Central African Republic. All patients who provide informed consent to enrol in the programme will receive tecovirimat. Patients will remain in hospital for the duration of treatment. Data on clinical signs and symptoms will be collected every day while the patient is hospitalised. Blood, throat and lesion samples will be collected at baseline and then on days 4, 8,

Author summary SARS-CoV-2 is known to cause several ocular manifestations in COVID-19 patients; however, the role of eyes in viral transmission and ocular tissue tropism remains elusive. The presence of viral remnants in various ocular tissues and fluids from COVID-19 patients has led to an assumption that SARS-CoV-2 may be transmitted through the eyes. Here, we show that SARS-CoV-2 ocular tropism is through cells lining the BRB. SARS-CoV-2 not only infects the various parts of the eye via systemic exposure but also induces a hyperinflammatory immune and antiviral response in the retina. Unexpectedly, the corneal epithelium was found to be resistant to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and ocular exposure of SARS-CoV-2 failed to cause lung pathology and moribund illness. Cells lining the BRB showed induced expression of viral entry receptors and enhanced susceptibility towards SARS-CoV-2-induced cell death, which is further potentiated with comorbidities such as hyperglycemia. Our findings from th

Mashup Score: 49The NCBI Comparative Genome Viewer (CGV) is an interactive visualization tool for the analysis of whole-genome eukaryotic alignments - 4 day(s) ago
Commonly used genome browsers only show one genome assembly at a time and cannot show comparisons between multiple genomes. This study develops a new visualization tool called the Comparative Genome Viewer (CGV) that aids in the pairwise comparison of whole-genome eukaryotic assembly-assembly alignments.

Applying a positive outlier lens is one effective approach for generating evidence to inform global health policy, program, and funding decisions. Exemplars in Global Health (EGH) is a program that studies positive outlier countries that have made extraordinary progress in health outcomes (despite limited resources) and disseminates their successes through multiple types of outputs. To date, EGH has studied, or is studying, 14 global health topics in 28 countries. This paper aims to identify findings, summarized as themes and sub-themes, that appear among all completed EGH studies. We developed a conceptual framework and used a content analysis approach to identify the top thematic areas that appear as drivers for programmatic success across EGH studies that were completed between June 2020-May 2023. The EGH studies (N = 31) spanned six topics including under-five child mortality (n = 6), childhood stunting (n = 5), community health workers (CHW) (n = 4), vaccine delivery (n = 3), COVI
