In this issue of Atherosclerosis, Meng et al. assessed the association between coronary artery calcium (CAC) density progression and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) [1]. They studied 304 individuals with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) who had prevalent CAC at baseline and underwent a subsequent CAC scan on non-contrast cardiac computed tomography (CT) at least 12 months apart. Per-patient mean CAC density was directly measured in Hounsfield Units (HU) from CT scans and the rate of progression was calculated as the change in CAC density divided by the interscan interval.
