Mashup Score: 56Understanding Prognostic versus Predictive Biomarkers - 13 day(s) ago
A variety of factors influence a patient’s clinical outcome, including intrinsic characteristics of the patient, disease, or medical condition, and the effects of any treatments that the patient receives. Some of the intrinsic characteristics may be reflected as prognostic biomarkers, i.e., biomarkers used to identify likelihood of a clinical event, disease recurrence or progression in patients who have the disease or medical condition of interest, and others as predictive biomarkers, i.e., biomarkers used to identify individuals who are more likely than similar individuals without the biomarker to experience a favorable or unfavorable effect from exposure to a medical product or an environmental agent. Prognostic biomarkers and predictive biomarkers cannot generally be distinguished when only patients who have received a particular therapy are studied. Some biomarkers are both prognostic and predictive. Prognostic biomarkers are often identified from observational data and are regular

Mashup Score: 4Thrombotic Microangiopathy and the Kidney - 2 month(s) ago
Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by endothelial injury and thrombotic occlusion of the microvasculature, leading to end-organ damage. This systemic disorder can affect any organ system, including the brain, heart, and gastrointestinal tract. However, the kidney is the most frequently affected organ.[1]

Mashup Score: 89Adverse Effects of Vaccines - 2 month(s) ago
In 1900, for every 1,000 babies born in the United States, 100 would die before their first birthday, often due to infectious diseases. Today, vaccines exist for many viral and bacterial diseases. The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, passed in 1986, was intended to bolster vaccine research and development through the federal coordination of vaccine initiatives and to provide relief to vaccine manufacturers facing financial burdens. The legislation also intended to address concerns about the safety of vaccines by instituting a compensation program, setting up a passive surveillance system for vaccine adverse events, and by providing information to consumers. A key component of the legislation required the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to collaborate with the Institute of Medicine to assess concerns about the safety of vaccines and potential adverse events, especially in children. Adverse Effects of Vaccines reviews the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evide

Mashup Score: 2Duffy Blood Group System - 6 month(s) ago
The Duffy blood group system is complex, highly immunogenic glycoprotein antigens found on the surface of Red Blood Cells (RBC), vasculature endothelial cells, alveolar epithelial cells, collecting tubules of the kidney, and on the surface of Purkinje cells in the brain, but are absent on the adult liver. Duffy antigens are absent on platelets, lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes.[1][2]

Mashup Score: 19Glomerulonephritis in Pregnancy - 7 month(s) ago
Pregnancy triggers numerous physiological changes, including volume expansion, vasodilation, and changes in hormonal milieu, which are crucial in facilitating the kidneys’ adaption to pregnancy. These changes cause a decline in serum creatinine levels, which is most prominent in the second trimester, after which serum creatinine begins to stabilize. Glomerulonephritis during pregnancy may present as acute kidney injury (AKI) or exacerbate preexisting chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD can affect both maternal and fetal well-being, but data on glomerulonephritis in pregnancy remain limited. Unique kidney-related pathophysiological changes in pregnancy are explored, with a focus on the evaluation and management of glomerulonephritis in this context.
