Mashup Score: 0Earth Day: time for transformational change - 12 hour(s) ago
On April 22, the 54th annual Earth Day will continue endeavours to “diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide”. Part of Earth Day’s ongoing work includes broadening the definition of environmental issues to include the health of both individuals and communities. This year’s theme, Planet vs Plastics, which encapsulates one of many ways the environment shapes human health, hopes to galvanise businesses, governments, non-governmental organisations, and individuals to commit to call for the end of plastics.

Mashup Score: 46Endocrine health in survivors of adult-onset cancer - 17 hour(s) ago
Long-term survivors of cancer (ie, the patient who is considered cured or for whom the disease is under long-term control and unlikely to recur) are at an increased risk of developing endocrine complications such as hypothalamic–pituitary dysfunctions, hypogonadisms, osteoporosis, or metabolic disorders, particularly when intensive tumour-directed therapies are applied. Symptom severity associated with these conditions ranges from mild and subclinical to highly detrimental, affecting individual health and quality of life.

Mashup Score: 1Many years of life lost to young-onset type 2 diabetes - 20 hour(s) ago
Years of life lost to diabetes is a metric that is receiving increasing attention given its potential use in health education and advocacy. People with diabetes have a loss of life expectancy of between 2·5 years and 12·9 years over the lifespan, as shown in multiple high-income populations.1

Mashup Score: 135Life expectancy associated with different ages at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in high-income countries: 23 million person-years of observation - 20 hour(s) ago
Every decade of earlier diagnosis of diabetes was associated with about 3–4 years of lower life expectancy, highlighting the need to develop and implement interventions that prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and to intensify the treatment of risk factors among young adults diagnosed with diabetes.

Mashup Score: 9Direct-to-consumer services: improving access to care for people with diabetes and obesity - 2 day(s) ago
When Eli Lilly started its US direct-to-consumer service earlier this year, it did so with the stated aim of offering “patients an innovative end-to-end experience to manage their health and access their medicines”. LillyDirect’s initial focus is on diabetes, migraine, and obesity, although Lilly has said that the service will “continue to be updated and expanded”. The site allows users to arrange home delivery of their prescribed Lilly product. People with diabetes, for example, can fill their prescription for Lilly’s fast-acting analogue insulin, Humalog.

Mashup Score: 10Rethinking the label anti-obesity medication - 2 day(s) ago
Pharmacotherapy approved to support people living with obesity has received much attention from the scientific and clinical communities, and general public. Clinical trials have reported substantial effects of these medications, including weight reduction and a reduced risk of cardiac events in people living with obesity.1–4

Mashup Score: 6Environmental chemical obesogens, what can we do? - 2 day(s) ago
Virtually every country in the world has shown a dramatic increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity since the 1980s. Rapidly changing dietary patterns, reductions in physical activity, and increased sedentary behaviour are assumed to be the main drivers of this rising trend, but there is increasing concern that they do not adequately explain the epidemic levels of obesity.1

Mashup Score: 2
Type 1 diabetes is characterised by substantial disease heterogeneity which influences rates of progression during presymptomatic stages, age at clinical onset, and residual β-cell function at the time of detectable autoimmunity. This heterogeneity poses challenges for disease staging and calls attention to the need for new surrogate endpoints in trials assessing disease-modifying therapies that better quantify and longitudinally track β-cell function.

Treatment-related BMD changes are strongly associated with fracture reductions across randomised trials of osteoporosis therapies with differing mechanisms of action. These analyses support BMD as a surrogate outcome for fracture outcomes in future randomised trials of new osteoporosis therapies and provide an important demonstration of the value of public access to individual patient data from multiple trials.

Mashup Score: 8The Human Insulin Thermal Solution project—a private sector initiative to address the thermostability of insulin - 3 day(s) ago
Insulin products should be refrigerated at 2–8°C before first use and can be stored at ambient temperatures (ie, 25–30°C) after opening for 4–6 weeks, as recommended by insulin manufacturers. The rate of physical and chemical degradation of insulin increases when the temperature is increased. Adherence to strict cold-storage conditions can be challenging in countries with very hot ambient temperatures, little access to refrigeration, unreliable electricity supply, or poor storage facilities, leading to improper storage of insulin products.
